The School of Theology of Virginia University of Lynchburg is designed to meet the educational needs of leaders and offers not only The Master of Divinity Program but also the Doctor of Ministry program. The Master of Divinity Program is designed as a basic professional course of study and preparation, for the clergy and laity in the ministry of the church. Through the VUL School of Theology curriculum, the student will receive a biblically-sound and historically-correct academic orientation for ministry and professional development. The primary objective is for the student to be motivated to continually pursue the knowledge of God, which will result in spiritual growth and maturity. A strong sense of professional competency is the intellectual reward for successfully completing the M.Div. program. The Doctor of Ministry Program is open to applicants, without discrimination, who have completed the Master of Divinity degree at an accredited seminary, provided they have been engaged in Professional church-related ministries for at least three years subsequent to receiving the M.Div degree, and provided they have demonstrated the ability to do academic work on the graduate level. This program is designed to provide the student with a program of professional training and preparation for the Christian Ministry, where high standards of scholarship and research in the basic academic disciplines are achieved, where moral and spiritual growth coupled with competence in ministry takes place and where the student Is prepared to achieve in any and all cultural settings. In fulfillment of its mission, the School of Theology of Virginia University of Lynchburg seeks: 1. To acknowledge the uniqueness of each student by assisting in defining and developing the specifics of their service in ministry. 2. To prepare the student for leadership roles and responsibilities beneficial to the African-American community. 3. To provide an environment of learning that is compassionate to the needs of the life-long learner. 4. To provide an environment that focuses upon the uniqueness of the African-American experience and heritage in America. 5. To strengthen and foster pride in that heritage. 6. To serve as a facilitator of the church in defining and identifying worship in its broader aspects, and in understanding its mission as it affects everyday life. 7. To reinforce the commitment to the African-American community and to foster empowerment whereby the student is prepared to assume the mantle of leadership not only in the African-American community but in the large community as well.
